In a world first, Craig Venter, a maverick biologist and billionaire entrepreneur, has made a synthetic cell from scratch.

In future, bacterial ‘factories’ could be set up to manufacture artificial organisms designed for specific tasks such as medicines or producing clean biofuels.

The technology could also be harnessed to create environmentally friendly bugs capable of mopping up carbon dioxide or toxic waste.

Dr Venter, a 63-year-old Vietnam War veteran known for his showman tendencies, said last night: ‘We are entering a new era where we’re limited mostly by our imaginations.’

But the breakthrough, which took 15 years and £27.7million to achieve, opens an ethical Pandora’s box. Ethicists said he is ‘creaking open the most profound door in humanity’s history’ – with unparalleled risks.

This is massive news!

Why I have not seen news about it anywhere else baffles me…I guess its not that big of news when you think about it, its one man playing GOD!!!!

The possibilities are endless, you would be able to create Anti Cancer Cell’s and these little guys can swim around your body eating cancer cells and you could do this for all diseases that plague our planet. You have a really bad flu? Just take to Immune Booster Tablets it will create an artificial immune system in your body, kill the flu virus and allow you own immune system strengthen up in a manner of hours or minuets who knows, the possibilities are endless……

and that is where the problem lies … endless possibilities ….. Although with this sort of technology we can act like gods we are unfortunately not gods, as humans we are corruptible, deceitful and have our own agendas.  This sort of technology can cause mass destruction and elimination of life. An Artificial life form can be created to eradicate a particular species of  plant or animal ….. or particular race of HUMANS!

All in all I think is is an incredible piece of technology and could advance the human race to incredible places, but is it worth the risk if it falls into the wrong hands?

Smiths Cloud discovered in 2008 is a cloud of hydrogen with a mass of approx 1 million of our suns, now it has been discovered that the cloud is massive enough to be classified has a galaxy, which appears to be colliding with ours.

Scientist believe this happen once before approx 70 million years ago which does match up with the extinction of Dinosaurs approx 60 – 70 million years ago.

In another article back in Feb 2005 the first Dark Galaxy was discovered made up almost entirely of Dark Matter. Could this be the same galaxy??

The scary part about Dark Matter is that we know very little about it, we can’t even see it (hence the name Dark Matter) we can only tell of its presents by it gravitational pull.

The most scary part about this is it is believed that our universe is made up of 25% Dark Matter, 70% Dark Energy and only 5% Ordinary Matter, therefore we really only understand 5% of the universal forces / energies that are out there.

Could we have collided with a galaxy 70 million years ago causing the extinction of the Dinosaurs and other species??

What effect (if any) would this collision have on the planet now, what effect on us??

Could this be part of the 2012 Mayan prediction???

Also i read in a forum this story was on the discovery channel early 2009 / late 2008.

It is true, from what I saw on discovery channel about this nearly 6 months ago, nasa was clearing an old warehouse, found all this stuff, an didn’t have the budget to hire the manpower to go through it all so they were going to destroy it. The guy who is pouring through it in the old mc’d's was there and offered to take it, analyze it, and report back to nasa if he found anything interesting. sounds weird but it is very true.

Forty years ago, unmanned lunar orbiters circled the moon taking extremely high-res photos of the surface to plan landing spots for Apollo 11 onward… In this McDonalds, the only copy of that data is about to be resurrected. Erik and I dropped in for a visit after the LUNAR rocket launch at NASA Ames.

And gosh, Alieness may be right too when they look at those images carefully for three-toe footprints…

They have never been seen by the public because at the time, they were classified because they would reveal the extreme precision of our spy satellites. Instead, all we have ever seen are the grainy photo of a photo images that were released to the public.

The spacecraft did not ship this film back to Earth. Instead, they developed the film on the Lunar Orbiter and then raster scanned the negatives with a 5 micron spot (200 lines/millimeter resolution) and beamed the data back to Earth using yet-to-be-patented-by-others lossless analog compression. Three ground stations on Earth (one was in Madrid) recorded the transmissions on these magnetic tapes.

Recovering the data has proven to be very difficult, requiring technological archeology. The only working version of the Ampex tape player ($300K when new) was discovered in a chicken coop and restored with the help of the original designer. There is only one person on Earth who still refurbishes these tape heads, and he is retiring this year. The skills to read this data archive are on the cusp of disappearing forever.

Some of the applications of this project, beyond accessing the best images of the moon ever taken, are to look for new landing sites for the new Google Lunar X-Prize landers, and to compare the new craters on the moon from 40 years ago, a measure of micrometeorite flux and risk to future lunar operations.
